A bungalow is a house that is all on one level on the ground, and has no stairs. They are popular in areas where there is no pressure on the land, or there is an aging population who find stairs difficult. In an estate of bungalows there is more privacy, as there are no neighbouring upper storey windows over looking the garden.
Bungalows were first built in large numbers in the United Kingdom during the suburban expansion between the wars and were almost exclusively private speculative developments. They are more expensive to build and buy than multi-storey houses, as there a larger roof area and foundation is required for a multi-story house that has the same internal space.
The roof space of bungalows is often converted to provide extra living space. Some bungalows were originally built with this feature, with dormer windows, and are referred to as chalet bungalows or dormer bungalows.
