Although many scientists tried to understand and explain the concept of Gravity at times as ancient as 8th century BC, It wasn't discovered until 1687 when Sir Isaac Newton explained the law of gravitation. He hypothesized the inverse square law of the universal gravitation. According to this law, the forces that keep the planets in their orbits are reciprocal as the squares of distances from the centers about which they revolve. Therefore we can compare the force requisite to keep the Moon in its orbit with force of gravity lying at the surface of the Earth.
