What Does A Space Probe Measure?

I need to know if a scientist design a space probe to detect life on a distant planet, what kinds of things should it measure?

    Space
         probe is already designed a long ago to detect life on planets. Space probe
         carries various instruments and there research is based on telemetry,
         they reports what they find. They should measure the rate of oxygen and
         the amount of water on the planet to assume life possibilities and they
         are doing so.
