If we sterilized soil and killed every living thing in it, the soil would no longer be "fertile".

But even if a soil contained all the necessary plant foods, nothing would grow in it without water to dissolve these foods. Water rises in soil just as water rises in a sponge placed in a saucer of water. The rising of this water keeps plants growing even when it does not rain for a long time. If you have spent holidays by the sea, you must have noticed the difference between high and low tide. In some parts of the world there is as much as 12 meters between the height of high and low water.
