My Lease Was Not Renewed, The Landlord Is Selling. Just Found Out He Rented An Apt. & Gave Them A 1 Yr Lease. I'm On A Monthly Basis, Yet New Tenants Get 1 Yr. Is This Legal?

I suspect my landlord is trying to get rid of the long-term tenants so that he may increase the rent on the vacated apt. And rent them at the higher amount.

The lease duration depends upon the agreement. Different states have different laws. The landlord can give an apartment on monthly basis or yearly basis. He is giving the new tenant a lease of 1 year and it is his right. You can't do anything in such a case.

Do you mean that every landlord can use the excuse that they are selling the property and not renew leases, then turn around and rent at a higher price once the tenant vacates? This is very underhanded and there must be some kind of recourse. I'm in NYC, can't I take him to housing court for this?
