Most East Indians migrated for the same reasons that people always migrate:  Greater opportunity or perceived opportunity in the place that they are going versus the place they have been.   In the case of East Indians the situation in S. Africa was even more attractive as they perceived themselves to already be citizens of the British Commonwealth and South Africa was also part of that loose Union (Sometimes referred to as the British Empire)

East Indians also migrated to Trinidad for the same reasons at that time.
