How Is Eye Contact Important In Communication?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

People who do not make eye contact either have low self-esteem, apathetic or they are not trustworthy. Either way the person you are talking to is most likely to feel ill at ease if you do not make proper eye contact. If you are applying for a job and do not make eye contact you will most likely not get the job even if you are by far the most qualified person applying. Good eye contact shows confidence, honesty, competence, and sincerity. However, if you have too much eye contact, you can appear aggressive or possibly uninterested. A good rule of thumb is to engage yourself in the conversation by staying focused on what the person you are talking to has to say. Find a reason to be interested. Listen to what the person is saying and ask questions that are pertinent to the conversation to show that you are truly listening and that you care what they have to say. This is a lost art in communication as so many people text instead of talk. It is all about body language and eye contact is probably the most important followed closely by good posture. Hope this helps. Susanne
