SMART-1 is the name of a lunar satellite launched in September 2003 of the European Space Agency. The satellite was built by Saab Ericsson Space a Swedish company; it had a length of 1 meter (about 3 ft) had a mass of 367 kg (809 lbs).

SMART or Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology was developed by the Swedish Space Corporation; it was propelled by a solar powered ion thruster and the mission was primarily to test the viability of the new innovation along with studying the surface of the moon specifically for traces of frozen water by way of X-ray and infrared images.

After orbiting the moon successfully for a period of 3 years the satellite was crashed in to the moon's surface on September 3, 2006 signaling the end of the mission. It is expected that the force of its impact would have exposed underlying layers of lunar terrain which could be studied in the future.
