The name Moultrie refers to William Moultrie a revolutionary general from America from the eighteenth century. He was born in the year 1730 and died in the year 1805. William Moultrie made his way into this world in Charleston, South Carolina. He made his mark in military affairs when he fought the Native Americans in 1761 and before the American Revolution William Moultrie was serving the colonial assembly. Sullivan Island was renamed Fort Moultrie after William Moultrie's gallant defence of the tiny fort. He even served as the governor of South Carolina after the war.

There is even a city in South Carolina called "Moultrie" named after this war hero. It is located in the south west of the state. The city has a population of less than fourteen and a half thousand.
