Bug tracking software refers to the tools which are used to detect bugs (or errors) in a software program or on an operating system. The purposes of using bug tracking tools are they help in recording bugs which are detected by them in a shared repository which is written in the XML language which is accessible to developers, testers and managers, supporting concurrent access to bug reports by multiple users, supporting multiple projects, assigning responsibilities, access and privileges to users for each project, customising the collection of data and the flow of work for each project, estimating, assigning and tracking the work which is required to resolve and test the bugs, classifying, sorting, viewing, print and generating reports which are based on priority, type and other properties and estimating the workloads of the personnel and the dates of release from bug statistics.

In addition, bug tracking software is also used to determine the dates of release which are based on the detection of the bugs and the statistics of resolution, to automatically maintain the history of each of the bugs, to generate release notes, progress reports and statistics for each of the projects, to evaluate the efficiency of the methods of detection which is used to locate new bugs and to send highly targeted e-mail notifications which are based on those events which are configured.
