How Do I Train A Dog To Bark At Sounds And Visitors To Defend The Home Front?

I adopted two Cavaliers 5 and 6 years old a year ago. They were retired breeding dogs and sad to say were kenneled all their lives except for whelping. They do not bark at sounds, visitors or when someone knocks. They have no idea what defending the home front means for dog behavior. Just recently, they will bark at other dogs barking. Human strangers only mean an opportunity for attention. Are there any simple exercises I could try to get them to start barking at sounds and visitors?

You may want to try to get them excited, maybe with a favorite toy or something - if you play long enough you can try to get them to bark, then anchor that with a command "speak" would work.
If you can get them to bark and then say the word you choose and praise them everytime, then you can get them to bark on command.
Once this is accomplished, you can use the command everytime the doorbell rings - eventually it will become habit to them and you won't have to say it anymore - just remember, praise praise praise when the dogs do what you want:)
