Are Hedgehogs Declining In Number?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A hedgehog is a small insectivorous animal commonly found in many parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. It is easily distinguishable on account of its spines which unlike a porcupine's cannot be projected and its ability to curl itself up into a ball when threatened. Hedgehogs are popular as a means of pest control as they are known to consume large quantities of insects at a time and hence are welcome creatures in gardens around the world.

In recent times the population of hedgehogs has been steadily declining due to several reasons like pollution and loss of habitat. Some of the factors are the high levels of insecticide found in soils which results in contamination of flora and fauna including insects the staple food of hedgehogs.

Also hedgehogs living in close proximity of humans are fed thing which are not suitable for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs being small in size are liable to be crushed under vehicles which have taken a heavy toll of their numbers
