Where Was Mikhail Kalinin Born?

    Mikhail Kalinin was an important figure in Soviet politics during the first half of the 20th century; he was born on November 19, 1875 Verkhnyaya Troitsa village in Tver Oblast in present day Russia. He came from a humble background and after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1919 rose to become the Chairman of the All-Union Executive Committee a post which designated him as the titular head of state.

    Kalinin also became a full member of the Politburo in 1925 where he remained in office for more than twenty years. In 1938 the post of Chairman of the All-Union Executive Committee was renamed as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR a post which Kalinin continued to hold until 1946. Kalinin was known in the Soviet Union for his compassion especially during the times of the Great Purge. Kalinin retired from public life in 1946 and died on July 3 in the same year; he was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.
