Most animals - cats, dogs, horses, wild animals - communicate with their eyes when facing an opponent. If the animal looks away, it is a sign of submission. If the animal does not, it is a sign that it is ready to do battle to determine who is the "Alpha" of the group. Cats also have another telltale sign when this happens - their ears point backward towards their tails. If that happens, break off eye contact and move back a foot or two.
