The harp refers to an instrument of music that is shaped much like an upright triangle. It consists of a pillar, a hollow back which contains the sounding board and a curved neck. It has a total of forty six or forty seven strings of different graded lengths. Music in a harp is made by plucking the strings with ones fingers. The instrument may differ in its actual frame and construction amongst the various cultures that it is found in. There are different models in existence in Asia, Africa and Europe. The word Harp is taken from the Middle English, taken in turn from the Old English word "hearpe" derived from the Old French word "harpe". It is believed to be of Germanic origin.
The instrument itself dates back even further; the first references are from Egypt nearly four thousand years ago.
