What Is Helium? How Does It Work?

Answer Question

Helium, represented as He, is a chemical element that is tasteless, odorless, colorless, and non-toxic. Helium's both boiling and melting points are the lowest among other elements. It is the second most abundant and lightest element in the universe.

Helium is employ for many reasons that involve few of its exclusive properties, such as low density, low boiling point, and low solubility and so on. Helium is available in large quantities as it is used for different purposes some of them are as follows:

    • Helium gas is used to fill airships because of its low density and incombustibility.
    • In exceptionally low temperatures liquid helium is used to cool certain metals to make superconductivity.
    • Helium is lighter than air therefore it is used in air-balloons and airships in order to lift them.
    • Helium is used as a coolant in some nuclear reactors because of its high thermal conductivity property.
    • Helium is also used to identify leaks in vacuum and pressure containers.
    • The use of helium decreases the deforming properties of temperature variants in the space between lenses in few telescopes.
    • As helium is less dense than air therefore it will change the quality of a person's voice when inhaled.
