Why Do Dogs Rub The Butts On The Ground?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sometimes it's itchy or irritated (occasionally from parasites) but usually they are attempting to express their anal glands. There are glands just inside there that they used to use to scent mark (and boy does it smell) long ago. Anal glands can become infected or impacted and abscess requiring treatment from a veterinarian if not emptied when necessary. You can either have your veterinarian do this or many groom shops offer the service or include it in the regular grooming. Sometimes it will occur if your dog is really scared about something.
Not every dog needs to have their anal glands manually expressed. It is more common in smaller dogs (most tend to need this done on a fairly regular basis) but larger dogs can sometimes need it routinely done as well. Some dogs also need to be expressed more often than others.
