The earths crust is made up of plates. These plates sometimes move, when they do we have an earthquake. Places like California that are very close to where two of the plates meet will have earthquakes. Sometimes the earthquakes happen under the earths oceans, when these plates move they arent always felt on land but they can cause a huge wave, called a Tsunami.
