If you are making a mode of, best to use papier mache, paper soaked in water and white glue and build up on an empty roll of paper towels. You can shape it and make it look like stones. Then paint with water colour paint to give it it's rock like look using black and white. Start first with white paint, then add a little black as you go for colour and texture as well as shading.
