Is It Tacky To Ask Guests To Bring Food To A 50th Wedding Anniversary Party?

We are having a 50th wedding anniversary party for my in-laws, and our budget is tight. We would like to ask guests to bring a dish, but my sister in law states that it is tacky, and we should be providing the food.

I think it depends on who the guests are. If it is mostly family and close friends it may be acceptable but if not I think it might be inappropriate. I just attended a 50th party for my sister and her husband. Her children gave the party and furnished everything. She has 5 children so it was a lot easier to do so. Maybe you could enlist several other family members to help out. Good luck!

Well actually there is such a thing as potluck for any occassion, so I don't see a problem if everyone already knows this up front. I mean I have actually been to potluck wedding receptions, where the atmosphere is most always a more casual/formal setting, as this should not be expected at an "expensive" formal setting Hope all goes well and congrats!
