The word scent, when used as a noun, is derived as an aroma. It means a distinctive odour or smell which is pleasant to the nose. It also means an odour which is left in passing by which an animal, such as a sniffer dog or a scent hound, can trace a person or an animal. Sniffer dogs or scent hounds are specifically trained and used by the police department for the purpose of tracking down people or other animals. They follow the trail or scent which is left in passing by these people or animals.

To scent is also a verb which means to odourise. In other words the verb to scent is to cause (something) to smell or to be smelly. It also means to catch the scent of (something) or to get wind of (something). To scent also means to perfume (oneself) or to apply perfume to oneself. The word scent is also used to define an olfactory property or any property which is detected by the olfactory system (or, in the simplest terms, the nose).
