Millipedes belong to the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Arthropoda, the subphylum Myriapoda and the class Diplopoda. The class Diplopoda was previously known as Chilognatha as well. Millipedes are a species of very long arthropods. They have cylindrical bodies and two pairs of legs on each segment of their body. The body of a millipede is divided into anything between 20 and 100, or even more, segments.
The first segment of the body of a millipede, which is just behind its head, does not have any appendages. The next few section of the body of a millipede have only one pair of legs. This class, namely the class Diplopoda, contains approximately 10, 000 different varieties of millipedes. The giant African millipede is the largest of the 10, 000 species of millipedes. Millipedes are detritivorous arthropods. They are known for their slow movement and they are non-venomous creatures.
