The total length of the M74 motorway is 35 miles or 56 kilometres. It runs from the southern outskirts of Glasgow in Tollcross and ends on the Anglo-Scottish border at Gretna in Abington. M74 motorway is in conjunction with the m6 motorway and forms a major cross border route between England and Scotland. M74 motorway is a part of the E05 which is   the international E-road network.

More than half of the M74 motorway is the A74m motorway. From Glasgow, the motorway runs in a south-eastern direction through the Clyde Valley. On the way are the towns of Hamilton, Bothwell and Motherwell. Further ahead, it meets the cross country A71 motorway at Larkhall. From here, the motorway takes a western direction through Abington, Lockerbie and Moffat and terminates near Gretna at the Scottish border.
