What Are The Reasons Of Copyright?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Copyrights chiefly protect intellectual property.  This includes things such as works of art, books, music, movies, poetry, inventions, architectural plans, etc.  The right to reproduce such materials rests solely with the owner(s) of the copyright for a given item.  In the event that a third party copys material without permission, knowingly or unknowingly, the owner(s) of the copyright can sue that third party.

For instance: If you copy a DVD without permission, you have violated the copyright of that DVD.  The owner of the copyright could sue you.  Also, you could be liable to pay a fine and/or serve jail time.

Another example: If you were to paint a picture, but someone steals your design and then sells it for money, you would be within your rights to sue for damages equal to the amount the thief made from selling the picture.  All you would need to do is prove you painted yours first.  (By merely painting it, it is automatically copyrighted, even if you don't file a copyright in the Library of Congress.)
