Coolant System Backup! What's Wrong?

I have a 1993 ford Taurus 3.8L V6 automatic GL. I had the water pump and drive belt replaced 3 months ago. The problem is the coolant is backed up in the reservoir and overheating. I think it is the thermostat or radiator cap. What do you think?

Sounds like the right place to start! If the coolant isn't moving through the cooling system it is usually a blockage and the first place to look is the thermostat. The cap is what assist in pressurizing the system so it would be overflowing at this point if the thermostat is malfunctioning or if it is not capable of maintaining the pressure the system needs in the engine operation. The cap is a quick easy solution and cheap, but is probably not the problem since it is relieving the pressure built-up in the system. It can also be verified fairly easily with a pressure test that usually can be done at most auto part stores now a day.

I think that there is pressure build up in the system due to a blown head gasket. Before jumping to that conclusion, you can try to drain and refill the system. An air lock may cause a backup style problem. So drain the system, start the car with the heat on HOT, and slowly fill the system.
