How Is A Lyre Constructed?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The body of the Lyre is hollow or sound chest. From the sound chest extends two raised arms, these arms are hollow and are curved both outwards and forward. In addition to this a crossbar is fixed to the sound chest, thus forming a bridge which transmits the vibrations of the strings. The strings of a Lyre were made of gut. These strings were stretched between the yoke and the bridge; they were sometimes also stretched between the yoke and the tailpiece which is located below the bridge. A tuning in a Lyre could be done in two ways, one of them being by turning the tuning pegs of the Lyre and the other one was to simply change the place of the strings upon the crossbar.
