Does The Chlorine In A Pool Damage Your Hair?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Swimming in a chlorinated pool can damage your hair because chlorine is a strong oxidising agent, and it tends to damage the cuticle of the hair, which is the outer layer protecting the shaft of the hair.

Too much exposure to chlorine tends to make your hair brittle. Because the hair then breaks easily, it can look like you are losing your hair.

However, just going for the occasional swim will not have severe effects upon your hair. It is if you swim regularly that you need to have  a serious think about how to protect your hair.

One way of protecting your hair is to wear a swimming cap, such as worn by professional and serious swimmers. Another way to protect your hair is to condition it before swimming, and to leave the conditioner in the hair. Also, nowadays, there are some specialist products particularly devoted to the task of protecting your hair while you swim. If you swim regularly in chlorinated pools, a trip to your local pharmacy may be in order.

Well, i am a bit young but i am gonna tell you how i feel? I feel that conditioner may damage your hair if you have a perm. The reason being is because my mother tells me this and so does the hair stylest as well. But as i sit and read the comments that everybody else makes about different ways you can protect your hair, i have a perm and i am going to a water park next week, but i dont want my hair to fall out or anything so i do have a swimming cap. My biggest problem i have is that i really dont want to walk around with a tite swimming cap on my head because it will make me look funny knowing that i am going with a few students in my school. Most importantly it is the only way to protect my hair but i do have a choice other then wear a swimming cap. I will try using condition or other items. But  i want to know if you havent got a perm in about a month or two, can you still get your hair wet in chlorine water?
