There are approximately three thousand five hundred different species of cockroaches, falling into six different families. The most well-known cockroaches are the American cockroach, the German coackroach and the Asian cockroach. The cockroach has made Earth its' home for millions of years with the earliest cockroach fossils dating back as far as three hundred and fifty-four to two hundred and ninety-five million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. It is sometimes said that the cockroach will "inherit the earth", after humanity destroys itself, as cockroaches are able to withstand many 'situations'. A cockroach is able to hold its' breath for fouty-five minutes, it can go without food for up to a month and it has the ability to slow down its' heart rate. Cockroaches also have a higher risistance to radiation, up to six to fifteen times higher than that of mans. Amazingly, a cockroach can even live without its' head. A cockroach will continue to scurry around, headless, for up to one week.
