some people have red hair because they do not have much pigment in their body. For example people with black hair have a lot of pigment, people with blonde hair have not very much pigment.

People have red hair, because they have little or none of the eumelanin(dark pigment),but have more of the pheomelanin(red pigment). Also, it is a recessive gene occurring at chromosome16. This could be passed over generation to generation.
