    A few considerations are cost, it determines how fancy you can get. Another is distance, each technology has significant distance limitations. Another is subnetting. How will you partition/organize your LAN. Will you partition it using layer 3 or layer 2? Another consideration is the services/bandwidth you want to run on your LAN (voice, video, data etc). Still another is security.

      A local area network is established keeping in view the needs of the organization. The arrangement or mapping of the nodes can be done precisely by implementing different network topologies. The different topologies are as follows;

      * Bus (Linear, Linear Bus)
      * Star
      * Ring
      * Mesh
      o partially connected mesh (or simply 'mesh')
      o fully connected mesh
      * Tree
      * Hybrid
      * Point to Point

      You can adopt any topology according to your system and need. The basic things you need to make a LAN are LAN Cables, LAN Cards and Networking Switch. You can arrange your computer by any way. For details about LAN Designs, click this link
