Bonifacio is located in the southernmost tip of the island of Corsica. The small town falls under the département of the Corse-du-Sud in France. It lies on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the tiny strip of land called the Strait of Bonifacio separates it from Sardinia.
The town is traditionally known as Bunifaziu (in Corsican) and the residents here are popularly known as Bonifaciens. It is divided into two main sections; the older part known as the 'veille ville' (old town) and the upper part known as 'la haute ville.' The total area of the town is a mere 139 km² and the last census stated that the population was about 2660 people. Today, it is one of the more popular tourist destinations especially for those residing in and around mainland France.
