The prime intention for giving birth to the Suez Canal was to provide an efficient means of transport. This purpose was indeed achieved shortly after the Suez Canal was built.

Before Suez Canal, the ships travel around the African continent from the west(Europ and America) to reach the far east, now you can imagine how much time have been saved.
