A prime aspect of the mission of the Spanish colonists was to spread Christianity among the Native Americans. For this matter, they did not even hesitate to use force, which they frequently incorporated to forcefully convince the Native Americans to accept their religion (the Catholic religion). Initially the explorers that had come here had assumed that Native Americans did not have any religion and further concluded that it was their (the Spanish's) responsibility to spread the message of Christianity and convert the Native Americans into pure Catholic Christians.

In the flow of their 'noble mission', the Spanish failed to acknowledge and respect the religious beliefs and faith of the Native Americans, something, which really ignited the anger of the Native Americans and led them to a revolt against the Spanish colonists, which pushed them out of the American colonies until the year 1696 when Spaniards regained control in the region
