Some natives do not hunt it, but others hunt it for food, for its hide, or to export it alive. Today it is a rare animal.

There arc wild asses that live in Asia. One type, the Syrian ass once lived in Syria and other parts of the Middle East, but is now probably extinct. The ass is strictly a desert animal, and can go for some time without water. Just before the young are born they gather into great herds, but soon break up into small groups, and scatter over the country.

The donkey of today is a descendant of the Nubian wild ass of North-Eastern Africa, where it once lived from the Nile to the Red Sea. Most of the wild types that existed in various parts of the world have been killed off. Today, man is trying to protect some of the few kinds that are left.In many parts of Mexico and Central America, the ass, or burro, is a common means of transportation, instead of the horse or motor-car.
