How Much Does It Cost To Put My Wife's Name On Our Title Deeds?

Answer Question

It is possible to add your wife's name to the title deeds without the advice of a solicitor and in this case it would cost just under £50.  This can be done with forms available from the Land Registry Office.  However, prior to doing this yourself, you would need to establish how you want the ownership to operate in practice, since there are various legal implications of choosing to be a joint tenant (this is a legal term for co-ownership) or whether you want a 'tenancy in common'.  The mortgage lender will also need to be notified and will perhaps make a small charge for any paperwork this creates.

A solicitor would be able to advise on the legal implications and what the best option is for a particular case.  This is important due to the consequences should you ever divorce or if one spouse dies.  The cost for solicitor's fees for this service will vary according to your location etc but it would be best to budget in the region of £250-£300 to have the deeds amended by a solicitor.

Free if you use a quitclaim deed. You can get your state's quitclaim deed forms at [ LegalFormsBank.biz ]. It is a legal form that will legally transfer property ownership interest.
