Hell's Kitchen is a neighbourhood of the borough of Manhattan. Manhattan is a borough of New York City in the United States of America. It is roughly located in the area between 34th Street and 57th Street. It approximately extends from 8th Avenue upto the River Hudson. Hell's Kitchen was once home to many poor New Yorkers, especially those belonging to the working class. Most of the former residents of Hell's Kitchen were Americans of Irish origin.
It was also the home of several famous personalities including James Braddock, the boxer who inspired the movie Cinderella Man, actors Sylvester Stallone and Chevy Chase, author Mario Puzo of Godfather fame, singer Alicia Keys and illusionist David Blaine. Also called Clinton (or Midtown West, because of its proximity to the Midtown Manhattan business district), Hell's Kitchen featured prominently in the New York City underworld. The fights between mobsters of Irish and Puerto Rican origin on the streets of Hell's Kitchen formed the basis of the Broadway musical West Side Story. Many actors and entertainers preferred to live in this area because of its proximity to Broadway theatres and the low rents in the area.
