Can The Sun Be Used For Cooking?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Although I personally prefer the more conventional methods of cooking using an oven, the sun can be used for cooking purposes. In hot countries such as Egypt and Africa, people use special curved mirrors to focus the sun's rays on a hot plate and cook their food on it. In many areas of the Middle East, demonstrations of cooking using the sun have been shown using a car bonnet and an egg. The temperatures are so fierce in these countries that when the sun is at its hottest, usually around midday, you can quite literally fry an egg on the bonnet of your car.

The sun can also be used to produce the energy source of what we know as solar power. We can 'capture' the sun's rays by using solar panels and use the heat source as a way of creating the power we need to supply our electrical needs to maintain our homes – including the cooker. Although it is quite an expensive process to initially set up, solar power costs less than the power supplies we all depend on and it is thought that eventually most homes will be powered by solar-power.
