Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is a massive variety of soils across the globe. However, soil types are inclined by numerous key factors such as: fine particles of rock, silt, clay and sand. The types of soil also consist of sand, pebbles, minerals and clay. In the UK, there are 5 main types of soil found, mainly, Chalk (or calcareous), Loam, Sand, Subsoil, Clay and Peat.
The Chalk (or calcareous), is a very sticky soil, they lack in humus and so, organic matter has to be added every year.
The Loam is a combination of sand and clay.  It is considered as the best soil for huge cultivation.
The Sand, is considered useful for early crops, since it warms up faster during the spring.
The Subsoil, allows drainage of the top soil and so this could be a disadvantage for the gardener.
The Clay is an advantage in a dry season, since it has water retention properties.
The Peat Soil is found mostly in marsh lands and is completely free from lime.
