The West Midlands is the name of an urban county which is located in the western part of central England. It houses a total number of 2,591,300 residents. It was officially established as a metropolitan county in the year 1974 following the passing of the Local Government act in the year 1972. The city is comprised of 7 metropolitan boroughs, which include the City of Birmingham, the City of Wolverhampton etc.

The West Midlands is a region which is surrounded by land on all sides, and is neighboured by the counties of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire.

The West Midlands county Council was discontinued in the year 1986 hence leading to its districts becoming independent authorities. Even then, the metropolitan county remains as an existing entity in law as well as a geographic structure of reference.
