Wigan Athletic Football Club was formed in 1932. They play at the JJB Stadium.
Wigan Athletic is considered quite a modern football club in comparison to many clubs that were founded in the late 1800s, with the Football League forming in 1888.
However, the reason that Wigan Athletic took a while to get off the ground, is because the town had had four other attempts at developing a local side before Wigan Athletic.
The first of these was Wigan County who played from 1897-1900. Wigan United and Wigan Town followed and Wigan Borough disbanded in 1931.
Wigan Athletic played in several non-league divisions before finally getting accepted into the Football League in 1978.
Wigan Athletic gained promotion into the Premiership after coming second in the Championship table in the 2004/05 season.
They did remarkably well in their first ever season in the Premiership and finished in a respectable 10th position in the 2005/06 season.
