It depends were are you located, (city, suburban, or rural), the first two are the easy, you can have an internet provider through dial up service (56k maximum)(your pc needs to have a modem either internal or external), or have a broadband provider through dsl line ( provide it by the local telco up to 7 meg/sec speed depends of how far you are from the local telco central office) or through a cable company( comcast, cablevision, roadruner, etc) they provide the router ( broadband modem  ususally capable of 5meg to 20 meg), in both cases of broadband you need an ethernet card on your pc ( best know as nic card).
In the case of rural location, you can still have the possibility to have the dial up  services, other options: Municipal wifi services (some towns have wireless internet services for some areas, they provide the equipment to connect.. In the case you are in a really far location from any urban place, you also can use satellite broadband connection.. A little bit expensive and requires the provider to  install a dish antenna and a special modem to give you the capability of connect to the internet... (this options is the best in far away locations... And the speeds are much better now. The downsize of this option is, inclement weather (a really bad storm)  sometimes affect your ability to connect to the satellite )
