               The surname Bowen is derived from ab Owen or Owain and has a strong regional preence in Wales. It is found in North and Mid Wales and is predominent in Anglesey.

               
               Owen or Owain is a very old name in Wales and is probably derived from the Latin Eugenius. It was always popular with leaders and princes, for example Owain Gwynedd c 1100-1170 and Owain Glyndwr c. 1354- 1416.


               By the fifteenth century it was found throughout Wales as a forename.
    Owen and then as the surname Bowen is an anglised form of Owain.

      I don't know if anyone has ever spelled Bowen these ways but phonetically speaking, it could be spelled Bowhen, Bohwen, Boughen, Bowin, Bowhin, Bohwin, Boughin , Bowain, Bowyn, - that's about all I can think of that isn't too far out.
