In the year 2006, the top ten countries ranked in the order of the most competitive economy in the world (that is, the world number one) to the tenth most competitive economy in the world according to the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report are Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Singapore, the United States, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The United States has had the most dramatic fall in the world rankings, from world number one in the WEF Global Competitiveness Report in 2005 to world number six in 2006. In 2005, the top ten were the United States at number one, followed by Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Singapore, Germany, Sweden, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), the United Kingdom and Japan.
The countries that have not shown any increase or decrease in the WEF Global Competitiveness Reports between 2005 and 2006 are Finland, Singapore, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, Chile, Spain, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Greece and Mauritius. Surprisingly, the top gainer is Guatemala, which rose 20 places from the 95th rank in 2005 to the 75th rank in 2006, and the biggest loser is Nigeria, which fell 18 places from the 83rd rank in 2005 to the 101st rank in 2006.
