Aspergillosis (Brooder pneumonia):
A mold Aspergillus's fumigates is the cause of this disease. Both chickens and turkeys become infected during hatching or during the first day or two in the brooder house. After the first week, birds apparently become resistant. The affected birds may stop eating and show symptoms of gasping or labored breathing. The organism may localize in the eye, causing ophthal-mitis. The first symptom is swelling of the eyelids and sticking together. The cornea may appear normally in the early stages, with blindness coming later. A cheesy pellet is found beneath the nectarous membrane. This pellet may be removed and the organism cultured from it. If the organism is localized in the mouth, trachea or bronchi, there may be hoarseness, labored breathing and a rattling in the throat.
Favus:
The fungus causing this disease is a mold Tri-chopyton megnini. The mold attacks the skin, almost always affecting the comb.It may spread to other parts of the face and body. Lesions appear as white spots, like sprinkled flour. Later, the lesions may become thick and crusty. The disease spreads slowly. Fortunately, the disease is not common because it can be transmitted to man, causing dermatitis.
