Tickets are priced based on a number of factors. The price of a ticket will generally depend on the size of the show, the venue(s) and whether it is a professional or amateur production.

Amateur productions should cost less than a professional production. This is because the cast members themselves are paying to be in the show. Most theatre groups charge a subscription and/or weekly rate which they use to cover the major costs of hiring a venue, set, costumes etc. The rest of the money needed is normally taken from ticket sales – primarily bought through friends and family.

In a professional production, you are getting what you pay for – professionals. The cost of the ticket will include a percentage to cover the wage of the cast and crew, transport, venue costs, travel costs, set, costume, show rights, insurance, publicity and of course paying back the sponsors!! The venue they are performing in will also normally take a small percentage of the total ticket sales.

This doesn't mean that smaller, lower priced shows are not of the same quality – it just means they have less overheads to worry about, or have some good funding!
