    Teenagers follow the same sleep pattern as any other human being. Generally speaking, humans experience eight hours of sleep with two of them being what is called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the period where dreaming takes place. It may take teenagers and young adults a little longer than say an infant or elderly individual to actually fall asleep once their head hits the pillow and their eyes are closed. There are many reasons for the rate at which any person is able to fall asleep and also many exceptions.

    Insomnia is the leading sleep disorder among this age group and is not actually a disease or medical problem in and of itself but a symptom to an underlying issue. Teenagers may find that they are excited or worried about different events that take place in the early years of life. Perhaps an upcoming test or sporting event related to school may cause anxiety, which in turn takes its toll on the ability to fall asleep quickly. Consumption of too many products that contain caffeine throughout the day can also keep a young person awake or lead to tossing and turning after their eyes are closed.

    An exact time frame from the point of a teenager lying down and closing their eyes to entrance into the first stage of the sleep cycle is difficult to determine because of the many variables that are involved. However, it should take no longer than approximately twenty-five minutes upon closing the eyes in order to fall asleep successfully for anyone. Any longer than this and it is likely that the body is just not ready for bed. Consulting a physician is the most viable option in a situation like this that persists for more than three nights per week on a regular basis.
