1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Abd al-Wahhab Al-Bayyati, Ya'qub Bilbul, Jamal Jumá, Saadi Youssef, Sinan Antoon, Sargon Boulus, Abdel Kader el-Janabi, Adnan Mohsen, Samuel Shimon, and Vivian Slioa, are some of Iraq's most noted poets.

Abd al-Wahhab Al-Bayyati, was born and brought up in the cities, was more of an urban writer, which made him quite unique among his contemporaries, who were mostly pastoral. He was always quite involved in world affairs and his works often reflected this, dealing with international figures, and the urban centers and cities he traveled through.

Jewish Iraqi poet, Ya'qub Bilbul lived during the Hashemite dynasty of King Faisal I.

Jamal Jumá, who was educated in Copenhagen, where today he resides has published a significant amount of poetry. His manuscripts of Erotica infuriated the Arab world with the confiscation and banning of these works. Iraqi author and poet, Saadi Youssef, is also a journalist, publisher and political activist. He has thirty volumes of poetry to his credit.

Despite the fact, that decades of Saddam Hussein's rule intimidated and silenced so many Iraqis, poets and authors continued to write and give hope and inspiration through the transformative power of their words. Iraqi poets produced beautiful literary works that are now accessible readers across the world. Most of the contemporary Iraqi poets produced their works while living in exile.
