Domenico Colombo, his father, was a wool weaver from a middle-class background, working between Genoa and Savona. His mothers name was Susanna Fontanarossa and his brother was called Bartolomeo.

However, even today, with DNA technology, the true identity of Columbus is not known for sure. The more popular theory is that he had an Italian ancestry.
