When Was Columbus Born?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is some debate regarding his precise birth date. It is usually accepted that he was born in Genoa somewhere between August and October 1451. Domenico Colombo, his father, was a wool weaver from a middle-class background, working between Genoa and Savona. His mothers name was Susanna Fontanarossa and his brother was called Bartolomeo.

Columbus is a Latinized variation Colombo, the Italian surname, which means dove. Originally, the name was one given to dove keepers. However, even today, with DNA technology, the true identity of Columbus is not known for sure. The more popular theory is that he had an Italian ancestry. It is thought that he came from the Republic of Genoa, Italy. Yet at the same time it has been hypothesised that Columbus could have been from Spain, Catalonia or Portugal which is where the best navigators of his era lived.
He was a navigator and maritime explorer who is credited as one who discovered the Americas.
