What Does Paolo Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Paolo basically was an ancient papal silver coin, initially created during the 16th century under the authority of Pope Paul III and also was named after him. It was distributed all over the Papal States and its value was equal to the giulio.

Identical coins were distributed locally in various Italian states; one was created in Tuscany and lasted from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The title "Paolo" is said to have originated from the Latin term meaning "Paucus" which meant "little".

The Papal States was one of the chief significant states of Italy prior to the Italian peninsula being combined in the year 1861 by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The Papal States included those territories which were governed by the Pope in a civil as well as spiritual manner prior to 1870.
