Work on location. Many artists travel so that they can get an idea of different surroundings. Think of what you are aiming to show through your art. Think about what type of settings you wish to illustrate. For example, if you wanted to show the atmosphere of a zoo, then you would visit a zoo and produce different sketches of the surroundings. Observe peoples' reactions to the animals, the way that the animals behave and how they react to being watched by people. Observe the animals' surroundings.

This would be the same with any location work. If you wanted to sketch the atmosphere of a shopping centre, for example, then pay a visit to one, find a comfortable spot, and observe the surroundings. Alternatively, you could do some photography on location if you don't feel comfortable drawing in public. Photographs are good as you can take them home and produce sketches from them, providing that you have good quality pictures. You might want to consider using a digital camera, as this allows you to process the images straight away without having to wait for them to be done in the shop. With a digital camera, you can also see what the image looks like on the screen, so you can decide whether it is good enough to keep or not.
